Below you'll find brief descriptions of the various groups and committees.
If you have any suggestions or would like to get involved, send a message!

Computer User Group:

leader: April Owens, computerusergroup@vbgsva.net
A special interest group within VBGS. It meets 8 times a year to view presentations on a variety of topics related to electronic research. Programs include videos on specific topics of research, discussions on various genealogy software, and member presentations on current research topics.  It is a more casual meeting than the monthly society meeting, offering opportunities for mentoring and helping each other. Topics this fall include: Using Family Search for Genealogical Research, Spotlight on Software (Legacy Family Tree and Roots Magic), and Converting VHS tapes, slides, and home movies to a digital format.  Currently we are meeting via Zoom at 7 pm, with dates listed on the website.

Writers Group:

leader: Carol Johnson, writersgroup@vbgsva.net
A group focused on encouraging and guiding members to getting their research written and preserved.

Awards Committee:

The Awards Committee consists of three members: a past Board member, a present Board member, and a current general member.  They are tasked with accepting and reviewing award nominations before submitting any nominations to the Board for final approval. The VBGS has three awards: Excellence in Publication by a member in the publication of a genealogical subject, Distinguished Service by a member of VBGS, and Volunteer of the Year. (The President may also dispense the President’s Letter of Appreciation at their discretion.) To see more about the awards and download the nomination forms, click here.

Education Committee:

chair: Heather Wright, education@vbgsva.net
Charged with offering additional educational opportunities to the VBGS membership. The committee currently offers How-to meetings where a wide variety of topics may be presented and classes can be tailored to the needs of those attending. If there is a topic you'd like to see covered, email the chair.

Membership Committee:

chair: Lori Sherwood, membership@vbgsva.net
Tasked with keeping track of our membership rolls.

Program Committee:

chair: Bob Bruce, program@vbgsva.net
In charge of our monthly meeting program, deciding the topic and finding speakers. However, it is important that this group receive input from membership. Feel free to send your recommendations for topics and speakers!

Publicity Committee:

chair: Barbara Murray, publicity@vbgsva.net
Strives to encourage visitors to attend and keep membership informed about our society. The committee continuously works to keep the website up-to-date and a useful resource.  We encourage everyone to visit the website often for updated and informative information.

Social Committee:

chair: Debby Christian, social@vbgsva.net
The committee’s vision is to help members get to know each other, to have members participate in activities together, and to attract new members through social activities. The committee hosted informal Coffee Hours on Zoom over the summer, where we discussed various topics. Future plans involve field trips to historical sites, libraries, and museums, both virtually and “in person”.
