Members at large act as the Awards Committee.

Any current VBGS member may nominate someone for an award.
Nominations should be in writing and include details of the service or achievement of the nominee
and submitted to the Awards Committee for consideration.


Nominations approved by the Awards Committee are submitted to the Board for final approval.

Awards

Excellence in Publication by a member in the publication of a genealogical subject

Excellence by a member in the publication of a genealogical subject appearing in a newsletter, journal, book, family history, blog within the past 18 months. This publication may be relevant to genealogy in general, not a specific location.
  • ​The nominee must have been a member of the Society for a minimum of one year
  •  Any member may nominate a candidate for the Excellence in Publication Award. 
  • Nominations must be made in writing and submitted to the Awards Committee. 
  • A documented article/s of outstanding contribution/s through newsletter, journals, and/or blogs by the nominee must be submitted to the Awards Committee.

Distinguished Service by a member of VBGS

This award recognizes a member’s exemplary contributions to the Virginia Beach Genealogical Society.  
  • The nominee must have been a member of the Society for a minimum of one year.
  • Any member may nominate a candidate for the Distinguished Service Award.
  • Nominations must be made in writing and submitted to the Awards and Recognition Committee.
  • A description of service must be written and any additional information can be included.
  • Another society member must provide an endorsement, signed and dated.

Robert F. Brown Award

The Robert F. Brown Award is the Society’s highest honor; established in memory of the Founder and first President of the Society. His vision was a group of people assisting each other in researching their genealogy and educating others in the techniques of genealogy. Past recipients include individuals instrumental in the establishment of VBGS or, through their work and dedication to the organization, helped to continue the development of the Society for many years.
  • The nominee must have been a member of the Society for a minimum of five years. 
  • Any member may nominate a candidate for the Robert F. Brown Award. 
  • A statement describing how the nominee fulfills Robert Brown’s vision of the Society’s purpose by the nominating member.
  • Two additional statements from members attesting to the accomplishments of the nominee.
